The Tension in Turkish Teacher Education: Conflict and Controversy during the Transformation from an Academic Approach to a Professional Approach

Most of the reforms, which have been undertaken in the last 30 years in the Turkish educational system, are about teacher education. Teacher education has a history of more than 150 years in Turkey. The first teacher education school was established in 1848 and all teacher education institutions, whose curriculum was based on the professional approach, were governed by the Ministry of National Education [MONE] until 1982. Both subjectmatter and educational courses were taught by the more experienced and certified teachers at MONE in this era.
